In the first of a new series, we would like you to get to know a little more about some of the key people within Space Engineering Services. First up it’s our Plant Manufacturing Director, Tony Mills.
How long have you been with the business?
I joined back in 1999 as I had a strong knowledge of mechanical engineering and I wanted to focus on project work. In this day and age, it’s unusual to be with one company for 20 years, but it has provided me with the opportunity to be involved with the manufacture of thousands of refrigerated units. Many of these units are still working 20 years on.
How would you describe yourself?
I am a hardworking individual who is passionate about his role and importantly the product that we manufacture here at our Pucklechurch facility. I take pride in the quality of our product.
What would do differently if you had the chance?
With every day being so busy it can sometimes be a challenge to ‘look-up’ and embrace the newest ways of working. It’s so important to do this to keep us moving forward.
What’s the biggest challenge facing you personally?
Ensuring that all of the team are developing the right skills and passion to drive the company forward and meet the challenges faced head-on.
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing the industry?
As with most manufacturing industries, the pressure to reduce cost is ever-present. We ensure that innovation and value is core to our manufacture and supply. This is a key consideration when reviewing cheaper imports.
What does a typical day look like?
I like to cycle into work and then take a walk around the manufacturing workshop and office to catch-up with the teams. We always get the senior team together to discuss priorities and plan the way ahead. The rest of the day is a mixture of meetings and problem-solving. I really enjoy the discussions focused around innovation and continuous improvement.
Is there anything about yourself that you want to improve?
Communication has become more and more important within the business so I believe that this is an area that everyone needs to keep on top of and keep improving.
What do you think the future of the business looks like?
Certainly a strengthening of our position via the supply of product into a wider range of sectors. A drive towards providing solutions that embrace sustainable technologies and energy sources as reliance on gas reduces.
Outside of work, what do you enjoy?
I have always had a love for the outdoors and spend my time focusing on fitness via mountain biking and mountaineering. I am also passionate about classic cars and caravanning.
